The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and EarthCheck have announced a landmark sustainability partnership at the 64th ICCA Congress in Porto, marking a significant shift in how the global business events community approaches climate action.

ICCA represents the world’s leading destinations, venues, and suppliers in the international meetings industry. Its global network plays a central role in shaping the future of business events through collaboration, innovation and shared knowledge.

EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism, has spent more than three decades helping destinations, businesses and events deliver cleaner, safer and more sustainable experiences.

The new two-year agreement brings these strengths together. EarthCheck will become ICCA’s preferred sustainability partner, supporting ICCA’s mission to reduce environmental impact, strengthen best practice and empower its global network to take meaningful action.

EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore said the partnership reflects a shared belief that collaboration and credible data are key to lasting change. “Both ICCA and EarthCheck recognise that sustainability must be measurable, transparent and actionable,” he said.

“By combining ICCA’s global reach with EarthCheck’s scientific benchmarking, we can empower destinations and event organisers to make informed decisions that create real impact across the industry.”

ICCA CEO Dr Senthil Gopinath said the partnership reinforces ICCA’s leadership in guiding the meetings industry toward a more responsible future. “Sustainability is an essential part of how our industry operates and grows,” he said.

“Through this collaboration with EarthCheck, ICCA is equipping our members and partners with the tools, training and insights they need to deliver events that contribute positively to people, place and planet.”

To launch the partnership, EarthCheck will apply its EventCalculator tool to measure the carbon footprint of the 2025 ICCA Congress in Porto. The results will provide valuable data to inform ICCA’s long-term sustainability roadmap and set clear, evidence-based targets aligned with the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative.

ICCA and EarthCheck will also collaborate on sustainability strategies, events, training and communications, ensuring sustainability principles are integrated across ICCA’s operations and major activities.

The partnership also opens new opportunities for ICCA members to access guidance, tools and certification support from EarthCheck to advance their own sustainability goals and reporting practices.

Together, ICCA and EarthCheck aim to accelerate progress across the global business events community, demonstrating how science-based frameworks and collective leadership can help the sector thrive in a low-carbon future.

Acknowledgement
of Country

There are more than 476 million Indigenous Peoples, found in all regions of the world, from the Arctic to the tropical forests. They make up more than 6 per cent of our global population.

In the spirit of reconciliation, EarthCheck acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout the world and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Indigenous Peoples today.

EarthCheck acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the forests and biodiversity hotspots we all depend on. Research shows that lands managed by Indigenous Peoples, with secure rights, experience lower deforestation rates, store more carbon, hold more biodiversity, and benefit more people than other lands — including protected areas.

We recognise and support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration is a positive document that maps out a path for Indigenous Peoples to be free from discrimination and secure in their identities and life choices.
