Walk The Talk

EarthCheck science & products were developed by the Australian Government Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre (STCRC), over a ten year period. Our science is reviewed annually to ensure that it meets international standards relative to greenhouse gas protocols, responsible tourism and certification.

EarthCheck products and services are built on the Agenda 21 principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio De Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992.

Our Certification program will provide you with a framework to achieve the desired outcomes for sustainable development as set out in the final report of the World Summit for Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002. It also complies with the Mohonk Agreement which outlines the guidelines and principles for an international sustainable tourism certification program.

EarthCheck Certified is Certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and has been approved by the CDP.

Tourism operations who display the EarthCheck Certified seal, can clearly demonstrate their environmental and social performance and provide confidence for consumers that they are walking the talk.

Costs:

Annual fee is AUD$4,800 excl of GST. Onsite audits are required every year AUD$2,420 Day 1 and AUD$1,650 per additional day.  Audit length is determined by size and operator risk profile.

Auditor travel expenses are in addition to certification fees. To ensure travel expenses are kept at a minimum, Certification Services are conducted on a regional schedule in order to streamline Benchmarking and Certification within a region, and reduce auditor travel costs for both our members and on the environment.

The EarthCheck Certified program will showcase to participating organisations how EarthCheck can assist their team to measure, organise and report their environmental and social management processes across the organisation. The program will require your business to measure, monitor and make ongoing improvements in the key performance areas outlined below;

Working with EarthCheck, you will create, enhance or align policies and documentation of procedures such as risk assessments, waste management plans and internal audits. In doing so, you will have an opportunity to improve your regulatory compliance in areas such as environmental emissions, energy efficiency and waste management, and as such can offer opportunities for cost reduction.

The creation of an effective environmental and social management plan reduces risk, provides assurance to stakeholders and delivers brand benefits.

EarthCheck’s proven methodology help you to organise all of your activities which might otherwise be conducted in a more ad hoc manner and will help the organisation harmonise their approach across their various departments.

EarthCheck will provide a consistent, structured approach to the management of environmental and social affairs.

So what’s included in the annual fee?

Software

EarthCheck will provide you with 12 months access the MyEarthCheck cloud software platform which will deliver practical tools, data templates, management reporting and a dedicated business software program.

The software platform provides an easy to use reporting framework to centralise the collection of sustainability data. It will enable you to easily measure, monitor and report your environmental, social and financial performance.

MyEarthCheck carbon reporting complies with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 14064 range of standards for greenhouse gas accounting, HCMI and the CDP.

Relationship Managers

Each member will have a minimum of 30 hours access to a dedicated Relationship Manager. Relationship Managers act as the key point of contact for members of the EarthCheck Programme for technical support and programme information. They also assist with the coordination and administration of EarthCheck Benchmarking Assessments and Certification schedules and processes for defined regions.

Resources

Over $50,000 worth of online tools will also be made available for you to download such as FAQs, Checklists, Templates, Guides, Case Studies and other resources.

Language

EarthCheck Certified is serviced and delivered in the following languages: German, Spanish, English or Chinese.

EventCheck

EventCheck is a free tool that allows organisations which host meetings and events to assess their current practices and determine if they have the systems in place to deliver a responsible meeting or event. Just as importantly it will point out in which areas they need to seek help.

All of EarthCheck’s products and services within the events space are aligned to the International Standard ISO 20121:2012 “Event Sustainability Management System” and follow major international protocols and guidelines.

If the event organiser has answered all questions in EventCheck positively for each event, EarthCheck encourages them to proceed to having their event verified. Upon the successful completion of the Events Assessment the event will be awarded with an EarthCheck Certificate and achievement logo.

This all sounds great, so where do I begin?

Phase 1: Benchmarking

Benchmarking is the first phase of the Certification process. 

Step 1: Policy – You will be required to develop and document an Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy that addresses the scope of the your organisation’s operations including location and sensitivity of the local environment, environmental and social impacts, activities, products, services and facilities.

Step 2: Benchmarking – Undergo a Benchmarking Assessment of your organisation’s operational performance. Our software will track and compare you against competitors by sector and climate zone across a number of Key Performance Areas including;

  • Energy Consumption
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • Potable Water Consumption
  • Water Savings
  • Waste Sent to Landfill
  • Waste Recycling
  • Community Commitment
  • Community Contributions
  • Paper Products
  • Cleaning Products
  • Pesticide Products
  • Corporate Social Responsibility

Following completion of a Benchmarking Assessment, you will receive a Performance report which provides a graphical and descriptive analysis of the total your performance.  Where necessary, it includes recommendations to encourage improvement. Members will also be awarded Benchmarked status and the use of the ‘Bronze Benchmarked’ seal to promote their achievement.

Phase 2: Certification

Phase 2, Certification involves completion of the final 4 steps:

Step 3: Compliance – Comply with all the requirements and intent of all prevailing laws.

Step 4: Sustainability Approach – Develop a Risk Assessment, Environmental Action Plan and Environmental Management System to manage and improve overall environmental and social performance across all Key Performance Areas.

Step 5: Performance – Assess the significance of the positive and negative impacts of your organisation’s activities, products and services against each of the Key Performance Areas.

Step 6: Communication – Communicate your environmental and social commitment, goals and objectives to all key stakeholders. .

Following completion of all 6 Steps you’ll then be required to demonstrate compliance through an Onsite Certification Audit undertaken by an approved EarthCheck Auditor. Audit duration is determined on a case by case basis due to the Size, Location, Staff levels and Activities of your organisation.

Organisations that provide EarthCheck Audits must be authorised by EarthCheck. Individual assessors are considered competent on the basis of meeting a set of pre-requisites, attending and passing the EarthCheck Auditor Training Course and a witnessed on-site assessment.

EarthCheck presently has formal global agreements with worldwide certification and auditing organisations. This has enabled us to provide regionally relevant audit services in more than 70 countries.

Following completion of an Audit, you will receive an Certification Audit Report. The Certification Audit Report is a qualitative evaluation of your organisation’s performance against the criteria EarthCheck Certified highlighting areas of best practice and non-conformance.

Organisations that successfully meet these requirements are awarded Certification and use of the ‘Silver Certified’ seal to promote their achievement. Consistent commitment to Certification offers organisations Gold Status (5-9 years), Platinum Status (10-14 years) or Master Status (15 years and over). Both the EarthCheck Benchmarked and Certified logos will display the year of your organisation’s achievement.
