"We are very proud of our hotels' sustainability efforts in the past year. Our energy intensity has decreased by 12 per cent and water intensity by nine per cent," said Carmen Ng, director of sustainability, Langham Hospitality Group.

"In 2014, we have dropped the average consumption of energy to 185 MJ per guest night from 211 MJ per guest night last year and the average water consumption of per guest night to 350 litres of water from 386 litres of water per guest night in 2013. It is our aim to achieve an even more sustainable operation in the longer term and we will continue to deliver on our commitment to protect the environment and reduce our environmental footprint," added Ms Ng.

In presenting the certification, EarthCheck founder and CEO, Stewart Moore, announced, "I would like to congratulate the whole team at Langham Hospitality Group on their outstanding achievement. This accomplishment places Langham as an industry leader that has consistently benchmarked operational and sustainability performance against internationally recognized criteria, and demonstrated a commitment to adopting responsible business practices across their operations. Langham Hospitality Group is an inspiring hotel operator worldwide and a valued member of a global group of tourism stakeholders who dares to make a difference." The group is constantly seeking opportunities to save energy and water by optimizing the efficiency of plants and equipment in newly opened hotels, and by upgrading the plants and equipment in older hotels.

The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi recently completed a series of energy and water conservation projects which included the boiler condensate recovery, boiler furnace descaling, steam pressure adjustments, heat insulation installation for the swimming pool and glass wall, LED light retrofitting, sensor controls for water taps and lighting, and cooling tower enhancements. This effort resulted in an estimated reduction of 30 per cent in energy costs, and 20 per cent in water consumption.

103 guest rooms were renovated at The Langham, Hong Kong in early 2014. In addition to enhancing the overall guest experience, the hotel installed energy and water conservation features such as LED light fittings, dual flushing systems, and water saving sanitary fitting appliances for bathrooms. As part of its energy saving initiative, The Langham, Hong Kong also implemented a renewable energy project on the rooftop where solar energy was collected and stored in a battery to support the water mist system, designed to increase efficiency in the chiller plant, particularly during the hot summer season in Hong Kong.

In line with the company's growth and expansion plan, The Langham Hospitality Group targets to have all new hotels to be Earthcheck certified within two years after its opening.
