For the first time ever, a destination's sustainability audit has been conducted in full view of a community audience. Holding Silver Status with EarthCheck, the global certification body, Sweden’s Destination Järvsö is setting the standard for transparency in sustainability efforts.

Recently, Destination Järvsö’s fourth sustainability certification audit was carried out. This process included site visits and a thorough review of documentation supporting the destination’s long-term sustainability initiatives. The audit, performed by international inspector Daniel Frey, made history as the first to be open to the public – an initiative driven by Destination Järvsö itself.

The event welcomed representatives from other destinations, such as Höga Kusten and Västmanland Tourism, together with community groups and students from Järvsö. Attendees gained an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at how sustainability audits for destinations  are conducted and the rigorous standards required to achieve EarthCheck certification.

“Opening up the audit is our way of inspiring other destinations to take sustainability seriously while showing how transparent and inclusive the process can be. It’s a bold step forward that could serve as a model for the future,” said Anna-Lena Wallin, Sustainability Coordinator at Destination Järvsö.

Collaboration and bold initiatives in focus

The three-day audit in late November included visits to key sites like the Vildriket wildlife park. Daniel Frey, a third-party and independent auditor for EarthCheck, led the review, questioning Järvsö’s Green Team – a collaborative group representing Destination Järvsö, Järvsö Council, and Ljusdal Municipality – on their past achievements, future plans and concrete evidence of sustainability efforts.

Frey commended the destination’s exceptional community involvement, describing it as one of Järvsö’s greatest strengths. “There’s incredible local engagement and vital grassroots initiatives.” He described Destination Järvsö’s proposal for an open audit as “highly interesting and completely unique”, highlighting their commitment, seriousness and generosity. “This initiative could – and should – set a new global standard for other destinations.”

On the road to Gold

Currently the only Swedish destination with EarthCheck Silver Status, Destination Järvsö has its sights set on achieving Gold Status during next year’s fifth audit. This milestone would reflect the destination’s sustained dedication to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.

“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and look forward to continuing our progress. Including others in the process not only strengthens our transparency but also demonstrates that sustainability is something we create together. We aim to be a catalyst for sustainable tourism in Sweden,” concluded Anna-Lena Wallin.

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, congratulated Destination Järvsö on this groundbreaking initiative. “The audit provided a unique opportunity for the community to understand the many initiatives that underpin Järvsö’s commitment to responsible tourism. Certification is not just a milestone; it is a reflection of the dedication and hard work that comes from the collaboration between industry, government partners and the community.”

Acknowledgement
of Country

There are more than 476 million Indigenous Peoples, found in all regions of the world, from the Arctic to the tropical forests. They make up more than 6 per cent of our global population.

In the spirit of reconciliation, EarthCheck acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout the world and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Indigenous Peoples today.

EarthCheck acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the forests and biodiversity hotspots we all depend on. Research shows that lands managed by Indigenous Peoples, with secure rights, experience lower deforestation rates, store more carbon, hold more biodiversity, and benefit more people than other lands — including protected areas.

We recognise and support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration is a positive document that maps out a path for Indigenous Peoples to be free from discrimination and secure in their identities and life choices.
