The City of Zurich has achieved the globally recognised Sustainable Destinations certification from EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking and certification group for sustainable travel and tourism.

As the first Swiss city to receive this prestigious certification, Zurich is setting a new benchmark for sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility in the heart of Europe.

“Zurich’s achievement demonstrates the city’s unwavering commitment to sustainability,” said Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck. “By joining EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations program, Zurich has taken another important step in ensuring that it not only remains a world-class destination, but also aligns with the highest standards of environmental stewardship.”

Zurich consistently ranks at the top of international sustainability indices, including the Smart City Index, where it claimed first place in 2023.

“Sustainability is a core pillar of everything we do in Zurich,” said Barbara Walther, Sustainability & Quality Manager for Zürich Tourism. “Zurich has made substantial investments in infrastructure, with high standards in water management, renewable energy, and rigorous waste management systems. The city also boasts one of the world’s most efficient public transportation networks, with trams, buses, and trains making it easy for residents and visitors to navigate without needing cars.

“Additionally, Zurich is committed to preserving and expanding green spaces. Parks, gardens, and recreational areas are thoughtfully integrated into urban planning, promoting biodiversity and giving residents access to nature.”

With a population of over 400,000 and nearly 23.6 million visitors annually, Zurich is renowned  both for its cultural attractions and for its status as a global financial hub, making it a prime destination for both leisure and business travellers.

“Visitors are increasingly conscious of sustainability,” she said. “Individual travellers are showing more interest in authentic experiences, often following the lead of locals, for whom sustainability is a top priority. Zurich is known for its exceptional quality of life, deeply connected to a sustainable lifestyle – and that’s something visitors are eager to experience firsthand.

“At the same time, 50 per cent of our guests visit Zurich for business, and we’re seeing significant growth in demand for sustainable MICE offerings, such as catering with local produce and legacy programs.”

EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations program is recognised worldwide for its rigorous, science-backed certification process, which is verified by independent third-party auditors. EarthCheck certification reassures tourists and business travellers that Zurich’s sustainability initiatives are real and impactful, and ensures accountability.

“EarthCheck certification highlights Zurich’s commitment to quality in every aspect, aligning seamlessly with our goal to minimise environmental impact while maximising social and economic benefits for both residents and visitors,” Walther said.

“This certification enables Zurich to demonstrate transparency and accountability in its sustainability practices, ensuring we uphold the highest standards and pursue continuous improvement.”

EarthCheck’s certification process requires participants to monitor, measure and meet strict criteria for the following areas, which are aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Energy efficiency, conservation and management
  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Air quality protection, noise control and light pollution
  • Management of freshwater resources
  • Wastewater management, drainage and streams
  • Ecosystem conservation and management
  • Land use planning and development
  • Transport
  • Solid waste management
  • Management of environmentally harmful substances
  • Cultural and social management
  • Economic management

Zurich’s participation in the Sustainable Destinations program also grants the city automatic access to EarthCheck’s Leading Destinations of the World™ network, connecting it with other destinations around the world that share a vision and a passion for improved sustainability outcomes.

Driving sustainability across the sector

Zürich Tourism plays a pivotal role in shaping the city’s tourism landscape by promoting sustainable practices, and supporting local tourism providers and stakeholders to follow their lead.

“We work closely with local businesses, attractions and service providers to implement eco-friendly initiatives,” Walther said. “Our goal is to raise awareness and empower our partners to take meaningful action, such as assisting hotels in obtaining certification for their sustainable practices.”

The Dolder Grand

Several hotels have already received EarthCheck certification, including The Dolder Grand and Storchen Zürich, two shining examples of sustainable luxury in Zurich.

The Dolder Grand, an iconic five-star hotel, has halved its energy consumption through the installation of a geothermal system, despite doubling its floor space. The hotel has also opened  a vegan restaurant, blooms, which sources organic, seasonal produce from its on-site garden.

The Storchen Zürich, located on the banks of the Limmat River, has undergone significant renovations to meet the highest sustainability standards. The hotel has eliminated single-use plastics, implemented a comprehensive food recycling program, and established a farm-to-table initiative to source fresh ingredients locally.

Hotel Alex Lake Zürich, Dolder Sports and Widder Hotel have also achieved EarthCheck certification.

“These properties exemplify what’s possible when a real commitment to sustainability meets the highest standards of luxury,” said Moore.

Zürich Tourism also operates a dedicated website that offers practical tips for living, travelling, and hosting events sustainably. The platform provides valuable resources, encouraging both visitors and tourism operators to adopt eco-friendly practices.

The organisation has also compiled a comprehensive list of tips and local initiatives for local businesses looking to make a positive environmental impact, highlighting practical steps they can take and community projects they can join.

Having achieved EarthCheck Sustainable Destinations Silver Certification, Zurich’s next goal is to attain EarthCheck Gold Certification, a prestigious status that requires maintaining Silver Certification for five consecutive years.

“EarthCheck Gold Certification requires a long-term commitment, but Zurich is well on its way,” Moore concluded. “The city’s dedication to sustainability and responsible tourism practices ensures that it will continue to thrive as a leading sustainable destination and an inspiration to the rest of Europe for years to come.”

Acknowledgement
of Country

There are more than 476 million Indigenous Peoples, found in all regions of the world, from the Arctic to the tropical forests. They make up more than 6 per cent of our global population.

In the spirit of reconciliation, EarthCheck acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout the world and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Indigenous Peoples today.

EarthCheck acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the forests and biodiversity hotspots we all depend on. Research shows that lands managed by Indigenous Peoples, with secure rights, experience lower deforestation rates, store more carbon, hold more biodiversity, and benefit more people than other lands — including protected areas.

We recognise and support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration is a positive document that maps out a path for Indigenous Peoples to be free from discrimination and secure in their identities and life choices.
