Munich, 15 November 2021 – Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich has set a new standard for the city. With an unwavering commitment to environmental protection, the Munich grand hotel has received the coveted Gold certification from EarthCheck following five straight years of certification.

With this achievement, Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich is now placed in an exclusive group of company’s worldwide with world-leading practices in environmental protection, social and economic development and cultural preservation. A pioneer in luxury hospitality in Europe, Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich is the first Kempinski hotel worldwide to receive Gold certification from EarthCheck.

“To achieve Gold, we closely monitor the environmental and social impacts of our hotel operation including energy and water consumption, carbon footprint, total waste generation and our engagement with the city,” says Holger Schroth, Managing Director of Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich.

To achieve Gold certification, Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich has had to meet EarthCheck’s rigorous environmental standards across ten key performance areas spanning greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, conservation and management, land use planning and management and waste management.

Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski promotes the use of green electricity, meticulously separates and identifies its waste and builds the capacity of all their employees on the fundamentals of environmental protection. During its recent renovation of their rooms, energy and climate protection requirements were considered and implemented during the planning phase. These included:

  • Facade insulation,
  • Heat-insulating windows,
  • LED lighting,
  • Air-conditioning and ventilation systems with heat recovery,
  • Intelligent in-room energy management system

“Achieving EarthCheck Gold Certification is not an easy task; there are no shortcuts, no avenues to buy your way in,” says EarthCheck CEO and Founder, Mr Stewart Moore. “It’s a matter of being able to prove the integrity of an organisation’s operational practices year-in and year-out, and then be willing to have everything verified by an independent, third-party auditor.”

Acknowledgement
of Country

There are more than 476 million Indigenous Peoples, found in all regions of the world, from the Arctic to the tropical forests. They make up more than 6 per cent of our global population.

In the spirit of reconciliation, EarthCheck acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout the world and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Indigenous Peoples today.

EarthCheck acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples are guardians of the forests and biodiversity hotspots we all depend on. Research shows that lands managed by Indigenous Peoples, with secure rights, experience lower deforestation rates, store more carbon, hold more biodiversity, and benefit more people than other lands — including protected areas.

We recognise and support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration is a positive document that maps out a path for Indigenous Peoples to be free from discrimination and secure in their identities and life choices.
