Managing social and environmental impact

The Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, a luxury seafront resort in southwest Tenerife, is the first hotel in Spain to achieve EarthCheck Gold Certification, highlighting the genuine effort by the resort team to improve the environmental, social and cultural environment in which the hotel resort operates.

With a social policy that embraces the cultural values and traditions of their community and boosts the economic development of the region, a Meliá Palacio de Isora Hotel aims to generate employment of local inhabitants as well as social integration of people from at-risk households.

The Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora’s initial journey with EarthCheck was to measure and monitor water consumption and waste management.

A determined team and operational efficiencies have reduced waste by 56% in a single year (from 16 litres to 7 litres per guest night), using a system of selective waste collection and an environmental awareness program shared with their employees.

In addition, the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora has made significant changes regarding energy consumption. The hotel resort has reduced its impact on the environment with the installation of LED lighting, motion sensors and intelligent home devices, a heating system using geothermic and an expenditure control system.

Best of all… the energy that they use is 100% from renewable sources and the resort produces almost 100% of the water they use due to having their own desalination plant!
