The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), South Asia's largest and finest hospitality company, celebrated Earth Day with a globally significant milestone – eight IHCL hotels achieved EarthCheck Platinum Certification, representing 10 continuous years of measuring and monitoring their social and environmental impact to ensure sustainable tourism management practices.

Dr. P.V. Ramana Murthy, Executive Vice President & Global Head HR, The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) said the internationally recognised EarthCheck Certification reflects IHCL’s long standing and unflinching commitment to creating a better environment through sustainable best practices.
“IHCL is proud of its track record to reduce its impact on the environment and privileged to be associated with an organisation as prestigious as EarthCheck,” Dr. P.V. Ramana Murthy said.
“It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce eight significant achievements on Earth Day and encourage other organisations to take action about conserving natural resources for future generations.”
IHCL has taken a pragmatic approach towards sustainability. Conserving energy and water, installing organic waste convertors to reduce waste sent to landfill and their commitment to phase out single use plastic in 2018 is admirable.
The IHCL hotels that achieved EarthCheck Platinum Certification include:
- Rambagh Palace, Jaipur
- Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives
- Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa
- Taj Lands End, Mumbai
- Taj West End, Bengaluru
- Ambassador, New Delhi
- Taj M G Road, Bengaluru
- President, Mumbai
EarthCheck Founder and CEO, Stewart Moore, said IHCL is setting a global standard for best practice in sustainability in the travel and tourism industry’’.
“The challenge is to continually prove the integrity of an organisation's operational practices and then be willing to have everything checked and measured by an independent third party,” Mr Moore said.
“IHCL has confirmed its position as a worldwide leader in responsible tourism and a genuine source of inspiration to the international tourism community.”
Since 2008, a total of 78 IHCL hotels have achieved EarthCheck Certification and generated significant savings:
- Conserved 2.38 billion litres of potable water, which is equivalent to 953 standard Olympic swimming pools.
- Minimised waste sent to landfill by recycling 12.1 million litres of waste, which is equivalent to 366 standard 20 feet shipping containers.
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions including 205,591 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to taking 68,990 cars off the road.
- Saved 1059 million megajoules of energy which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 44,481 houses (typically 4 person households in a developed country).
