Mexico’s leading resort operator and tourism developer, Grupo Vidanta, adds another EarthCheck Gold to their portfolio with the recent certification of Vidanta Puerto Peñasco.
The certification of Mayan Palace Puerto Peñasco and its Jack Nicklaus designed Golf Course recognises Grupo Vidanta’s long term commitment to a sustainable tourism industry in Mexico.
Stewart Moore, CEO and founder of EarthCheck, said that Grupo Vidanta has a long standing commitment to sustainability, which is reflected in their continued dedication to the EarthCheck program throughout its destinations. Vidanta Puerto Peñasco recognises that continuous and ongoing improvement in its operations will positively impact on future generations and their destination; a paradise between the desert and Sea of Cortés. This is why they undergo the rigorous EarthCheck Certification year after year.
Moore said, “I would like to congratulate the whole team at Vidanta Puerto Peñasco on their Gold achievement, which recognises five continuous years of independent accreditation. The resort is a leading operator in Mexico and a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”
Since joining the program in 2009, the resort has revealed over half a million dollars in financial savings through initiatives such as recycling, energy efficiency programmes, turtle conservation actions, and many more. These initiatives helped average reductions of;
- 22% in Energy,
- 73% in Waste to Landfill, and;
- 26% in Greenhouse Gas emissions
One innovative initiative to reduce dependence on local and countrywide potable water was the installation of two (2) water treatment plants processing both community and resort generated waste water. These plants have produced over 1,000,000 m3 of treated water, enabling a 23% and 30% reduction in potable water consumption by the resort and the golf course, respectively.
‘Our mission is to get our guests to live extraordinary experiences, and to inspire future generations with happiness and harmony. We are certain that this can only be achieved if we protect and respect our home, planet earth.’ Said Cyntia de Cayón, Vidanta Puerto Peñasco’s Resident Manager. On the 20th of April a special event took place to deliver the EarthCheck Gold Certification where they once again committed to the environment, the local community and the economy of Puerto Peñasco. ‘It is key that clients, guests and staff are invited and involved in these events and sustainability initiatives. It’s the only way to raise awareness in what sustainable tourism involves,’ she added.
EarthCheck provided Vidanta Puerto Peñasco with a framework for environmental and social sustainability. This included requirements specific to the resort and golf courses management systems, such as quality, environment, occupational health and safety, risk management and corporate social reporting. EarthCheck Certified status also automatically qualifies the resort for the National Sustainable Tourism Accreditation program Distintivo “S”.
