Eaton Smart Hong Kong has won the "Best Eco Hotel" award, organised by the 2012 HotelClub Hotel Awards in Hong Kong, for recognising its outstanding sustainable practices carried out in the hotel and environmental contributions. The achievement reiterates the Eaton Smart, Hong Kong's commitment of continuous improvement towards sustainability; it also encourages the team at the hotel to go green further.

The HotelClub conducted a rigorous audit including a thorough site inspection, hotel guests' review and implementation of the hotel's sustainable policy. During the audit, Eaton Smart stood out among other finalists with its transparent and credible reporting of the environmental and social performance and strong ecological operations.

"This accolade is an essential recognition of our commitment to be responsible for carbon and energy saving," said Maggie Tsui, the Hotel's Environmental Officer, "Eaton Smart will keep preserving the environment and supporting the eco-friendly organisation by all means, we are extremely proud of everyone involved in this green journey and it is my honour to be part of the team who has made this possible."

Eaton Smart has strived to implement its commitment by carrying out various actions internally and externally:

  • + Raise the awareness of hotel staffs by launching trainings and activities on environmental protection and sustainable development e.g. Food and Chemical Waste Recycling Programme
  • + Environmental friendly programmes have been introduced to promote hotel's environmental and sustainable initiatives e.g. Guest of the Earth and Green Meeting Packages
  • + Support green organisations by participating in eco-friendly activities e.g. Glass Bottle Recycling Programme (Environmental Protection Department), Food Donation (Foodlink Foundation Limited) and From Used to Useful Local Recycling Action - Cooking Oil (Friends of the Earth)
  • + Reduce carbon footprint by implementing resources saving devices e.g. installation of energy efficient water-cooled chiller system, solar functioning and low flow taps, retrofitting halogen bulbs into LED bulbs
  • + A green-themed Christmas tree made from tissue paper rolls. More than 50 staff members spent over 2 months and pieced together 4,936 tissue paper rolls to construct the striking 15ft Christmas tree with 80 aluminum cans as decoration.

In 2011, the hotel has achieved the Silver Certification by EarthCheck, an international leading benchmarking, certification and environmental management programme used by travel and tourism industry.

"We believe today's travellers are looking to fulfill their specific interests when choosing their hotel stays. For example, environmentally conscious travellers are looking to book their stays at eco-friendly hotels, and Eaton Smart is the perfect option for them," said Claire Wong, PR Director of HotelClub.
