Award-winning flagship property of Dusit International - Dusit Thani Manila, has once again received a global recognition. This time, awarded with a Silver level certification by EarthCheck.

Trusted by more than 1300 organizations in over 70 countries, EarthCheck is an internationally recognized environmental management and certification program designed for the Travel and Tourism industry. It helps determine a company's standard of environmental, social, and economic performance and requires compliance to internationally recognized standards. This includes the reporting of Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) and consumption of natural resources.

In order for Dusit Thani Manila to gain EarthCheck Certified status, the five-star luxury hotel was required to submit a year's worth of operational data to EarthCheck for Benchmarking purposes. This was then compared to the operational data submitted by similar organizations, before being rated against Baseline and Best Practice levels.

Dusit Thani Manila was also required to submit to independent, third party auditing, to verify the accuracy of their sustainability claims. Their policies require the use of energy-efficient lighting, the minimization of water consumption, recycling of solid waste products and use of recycled products whenever possible. This has resulted in a decrease in Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) for the hotel's operations.

Aside from the hotel's commitment to the efficient use of natural resources, environmental education of staff, guests and suppliers and the use of biodegradable products, following are some of the on-going environmental efforts of Dusit Thani Manila:

24/7 GREEN INITIATIVE

Each restaurant also showcases its respective contribution to make a greener and better world all year round. Basix, the all-day dining restaurant suggests conservation of resources through its Surf and Turf Station where the grilling items are cooked on guest's demand only and promotes no wastage of food. Basix has also stopped patronizing endangered species such as blue fin tuna and sharks fin. Tosca, on the other hand makes use of unplugged entertainment to conserve energy.

Benjarong, the Royal Thai Restaurant takes pride in its naturally brewed Thai Pandan and Lemongrass Juices, the use of unrefined herbs and spices and its use of banana leaves, squash, pomelo and melon skin as serving bowls to prevent wastage of water and chemicals of dishwashing soaps. The freshest ingredients take center stage at Umu with its sushi bar and robata counter offerings prepared ala minute to promote no food wastage. Lobby Lounge features locally produced Lambanog Cocktails using 100% natural sources that include sugar cane, coconut and rice, thus preventing the usage of imported ingredients that will help reduce carbon footprint.

SEAMLESS MEETINGS

Dusit Thani Manila also faithfully adheres to this thrust even beyond the hour through its Seamless Meetings - The Green Initiative that provides facilities and meeting package services which will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint for its clients and its properties.

To name a few of these green initiatives are the use of conference pads and pencils made of recycled materials, use of compact slim fluorescents and setting of room temperature at 24C to limit energy use, reduce unnecessary waste by replacing disposable items with reusable ones, such as whiteboard menus, recycled paper napkins, ceramic creamers and sugar dispensers, china and glassware, and use of function rooms at the 2nd floor meeting center which have natural daylight.

DUSIT GREEN HOUR

Dusit Thani Manila conducts every last Saturday of the month 'Dusit Green Hour' which is the monthly version of the Earth Hour. Dusit Green Hour is 60-minute hotel-wide lights-off campaign that has been going on since June 27, 2009 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, an initiative in its continuous fight against global warming.

The monthly Dusit Green Hour is being conducted and participated by the entire Dusit Thani Manila consisting of the DFiT Fitness Centre, Devarana Spa, main Hotel lobby and all its restaurants and bars. Hotel guests are also encouraged to switch off the lights in their rooms.

As this campaign endeavours to save Mother Earth that eventually saves energy cost for the hotel, all its dining guests are also being shared the saving benefits of this thrust by entitling them 30% discount on any food and beverage orders for dinner every last Saturday of each month.
